Student Technology Usage Policy

Use of Technology & Information Resources BOE Policy 7314

We are proud to offer your child access to comprehensive educational computer resources, including software applications, databases, and web-based electronic information and services. However this access is a privilege, not a right, and carries with it the responsibility for demonstrating proper care and etiquette when using computer based learning resources.

Student data files and other electronic storage areas will be treated like school lockers. This means that such areas shall be considered to be the School District property subject to control and inspection. This includes, but is not limited to, all photograph and videotaping on school premises. The Computer Coordinator may access all such files, pictures, and communications without prior notice to ensure system integrity and that users are complying with the requirements of this policy. Students should not expect that information stored on the District Computer System will be private.

Tupper Lake Middle/High School regards the following as unacceptable uses of electronic facilities/equipment:

  • Intentional damage of equipment or information to include but not limited to theft, vandalism, attempting to gain unauthorized access of any software, operating systems, or files other than those you personally own or create. This includes installing, copying, or knowingly infecting a school computer with a virus or other malware.

  • Using school resources to perform illegal activities such as intentionally accessing or attempting to access digital information of a pornographic, racist, or otherwise inappropriate content.

  • Unethical behavior such as posting abusive, derogatory or inappropriate remarks, cyberbullying, using someone else’s account, or revealing or posting someone’s personal information.

  • Non – instructional use of school resources such as playing unauthorized games, wasting file storage space, printer ink, and paper supplies.

Ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their children should follow when using computers and related technology-based resources. Accordingly, Tupper Lake Central School District respects and supports each family’s right to determine whether or not their children may have this access.
